Two Miami-Dade police officers were wounded in a shooting late Wednesday that erupted during an investigation at a residence.
The incident happened shortly after 10:30 p.m. at a home in southwest Miami-Dade, WPLG-TV reports. A man with a shotgun opened fire when officers approached the door.
A 57-year-old male officer was struck in the upper extremity and face, and a 35-year-old male officer was struck in the upper extremity, according to the doctor.
“This type of violence towards my officers will not be tolerated,” said Stephanie V. Daniels, the director of the department. “By the grace of God, they are alive today.”
Police were able to return fire, and the armed suspect was fatally shot. The suspect's identity was not immediately released.
The wounded officers were rushed to the hospital by colleagues at the scene. A 40-year-old female officer also was taken to the hospital to be evaluated for an unspecified reason.
According to police, the 57-year-old officer has been with the agency for 15 years, and the 35-year-old officer joined the department seven years ago. The 40-year-old officer has been with the department for less than a year.
